October 10, 2024

Two students from the Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord, Amyka Gagné and Roxane Kamagate, received the Prix de jeunesse Richelieu at the 23rd annual Evening Mérite Horace-Viau. This prestigious recognition honors their contribution and commitment to the development and promotion of French culture and language in their schools and communities.

Amyka Gagné, a grade 12 student at École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier, stands out for her active involvement and passion for promoting school and cultural activities. As an active member of the Les Draveurs theater troupe, Amyka produces promotional recordings and photography for social media, highlighting events and successes in her school community.

Alongside host and artist Mique Michelle, Amyka participated in the filming of TFO’s “Couleurs du Nord”, a documentary series for children that celebrates the beauty and identity of the North through conversation, collaboration and color. Amyka has also worked on broadcast cameras for Eastlink TV and the Sudbury Wolves, making souvenir videos for field hockey teams in her community while celebrating important moments for young people and their families.

Amyka is also an active participant in Métis Nation activities, helping to promote and preserve a rich cultural heritage. Her community involvement is a source of inspiration for her peers and demonstrates her deep attachment to her roots.

Roxane Kamagate, an alumna of École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier High stands out for her initiative and leadership. During her high school years, Roxane was an active participant in school sports, such as basketball and volleyball, as well as various school activities.

A natural leader, Roxane took part in the ANNA (Accueil des nouveaux et nouvelles arrivant(e)s) committee, which aims to raise awareness in the school community of the importance of diversity and inclusion. She also took part in Francophone Immigration Week and sat on the organizing committee for Black Month. Roxane shines through her exceptional ability to rally people around her and inspire them to commit to common goals.

Persevering and determined, Roxane put her talents to good use by starting her own business through the “C’est moi l’boss!” school project. She developed this business when she was accepted into the Summer Company program with the Sudbury Regional Business Centre. Roxane is currently pursuing her studies in the health field at the University of Ottawa.

Amyka Gagnée and Roxane Kamagate’s passion for community involvement and their dedication to promoting the French language and culture make them deserving recipients of the Prix de jeunesse Richelieu. The Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord would like to congratulate these two young recipients and wish them every success in their studies and future endeavours.

Recognized for its keen sense of innovation and openness to the world, Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord offers a French-language public education of the highest quality in fifteen elementary schools and eight secondary schools in the communities of Markstay, Noëlville, Greater Sudbury, Blind River, Elliot Lake, Sault Ste. Marie, Wawa, Dubreuilville, Marathon, Manitouwadge, Longlac and Thunder Bay.
