École secondaire Hanmer Student Wins Five Medals at the World Hapkido Championships

July 10, 2026

Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord is proud to recognize the outstanding achievement of Mathew Gilliard, a student who will be entering Grade 12 at École secondaire Hanmer this September, after proudly representing Canada at the World Hapkido Championships held from June 16 to 25, 2026, in Busan, South Korea.

A former student of École publique de la Découverte, Mathew has been practicing Hapkido for the past seven years. Originally enrolled by his parents to help improve his core strength, focus and hockey performance, he has risen to compete among the world’s top athletes through his dedication, discipline and hard work.

At the prestigious international competition, Mathew earned an impressive total of five medals:

  • Gold Medal – Self-Defense
  • Gold Medal – Forms
  • Gold Medal – Long Jump
  • Silver Medal – Speed Kicking
  • Silver Medal – Weapons Handling

Mathew is especially proud of his gold medal in Self-Defense, an event he had avoided until just a few months ago. One of the highlights of his trip was experiencing a new culture and meeting athletes from around the world.

“Competing on the world stage was an unforgettable experience that pushed me both mentally and physically. Martial arts has taught me focus and dedication, but being part of an international event like this really showed me what is possible when you believe in yourself and work hard,” said Mathew Gilliard.

Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord warmly congratulates Mathew Gilliard on this exceptional accomplishment, which brings pride not only to his school but also to the entire Francophone community of Northern Ontario. The school board also extends its sincere thanks to Mathew’s parents for their unwavering support, as well as to Mr. Alex St-Amant for his guidance and encouragement throughout Mathew’s journey.

Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord wishes Mathew continued success in his studies, in achieving his black belt, and in pursuing his career goals as a mechanic.
