Access to French-language education

Children of French-language rights holders can attend a French public school.

This right is granted under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is recognized in the Ontario Education Act.

According to Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the following children can attend a French-language school:

  • All children of a parent whose first language learned and still understood is French;
  • All children of a parent who received his or her primary school instruction in Canada in French;
  • All children whose sibling has received or is receiving primary or secondary school instruction in Canada in French.
Everyone is welcome!

Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord prides itself in its accessibility and strives to reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity that makes up its community. Even if your child does not meet the criteria outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, he or she can still apply to attend a French-language school. An admissions committee will assess its French language skills to determine its eligibility and provide an opportunity to join our learning environment.

For more information about the right to French-language education in a minority setting, refer to Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or contact the principal of one of our elementary or secondary schools.

If your child does not meet the criteria, you may submit a request to the school principal and arrange a meeting with an admissions committee, as outlined in the Ontario Education Act (Sections 289 (1) and 302 (1)). The committee will assess whether your child understands, speaks, reads, and writes French at an age-appropriate and grade-appropriate level.

For additional details about the registration process, please reach out to the principal of one of our elementary or secondary schools.
