A New Elementary School Takes Shape in Marathon: Enrollment Open and Principal Appointed

April 2, 2026

Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord is pleased to confirm that the development of its new elementary school in Marathon is progressing rapidly. The school will welcome students from kindergarten to Grade 6 on the first day of the 2026–2027 school year.

Thanks to a provincial investment of $2.3 million and in collaboration with the Superior-Greenstone District School Board, renovations at the Margaret Twomey Public School building will provide a modern, safe, and fully adapted space for young Francophone students.

“The opening of this kindergarten-to-Grade 6 school in September addresses a vital need for families in Marathon. We are building more than classrooms; this will be a true cultural hub where our young students can thrive and learn in their language. It is a tremendous source of pride to see this project come to life for the upcoming school year,” said Francine Vaillancourt, Chair of Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord.

Enrollment for the new school is already underway, and the Board encourages parents to secure their child’s spot now to be part of this historic first cohort. “We see the school taking shape every day, and we can’t wait to see the hallways come alive,” said Carl Dussault, Director of Education. “This is the perfect time for families to join this new educational adventure.”

The Board is also proud to announce the appointment of Ms. Julie Cyr as Principal of the new École publique de Marathon. Ms. Cyr has been working in education since 2001 and currently serves as Principal of École secondaire Cité-Supérieure in Marathon. By leading both schools, she will provide stable leadership and foster genuine pedagogical synergy from kindergarten through Grade 12. Recipient of Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord 2024 Innovation Award, she is recognized for her bold educational initiatives and passion for student success. Her expertise, combined with her deep knowledge of the community, will ensure a coherent learning path for students while creating a stimulating environment where each child can reach their full potential in French.

Families interested in learning more can visit the school’s website, call 807-230-0005, or email epm@grandnord.ca. Online enrollment is now open: https://epm.grandnord.ca/inscription/inscrivez-votre-enfant/. The school looks forward to welcoming students and contributing actively to the educational vitality of the region.
