École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier launches a Specialist High Skills Major in Health and Wellness

École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier (ESMC) is proud to announce the launch of its new Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Health and Wellness, which will be offered starting in the 2026–2027 school year.

This free program aims to provide students with hands-on, authentic learning experiences related to the health sector, while allowing them to earn several recognized certifications throughout their studies. It is built on community partnerships and exploratory activities that help students discover various careers, programs, and learning pathways.

The launch brought together several community partners, including Collège Boréal, Laurentian University, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine University (NOSM University), as well as Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury. These partners hosted booths to raise awareness among students about careers and specialized programs in the health and wellness sector.

At ESMC, interest in SHSM programs continues to grow. This year, 7 students will graduate with an SHSM in Arts and Culture, and 18 in Mining. Already, about thirty students are enrolled in the new Health and Wellness cohort.

“This program represents an exceptional opportunity for our students to explore pathways in essential and high-demand sectors,” said Josée Tremblay, Principal of École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier.
