Close to 4,500 Francophone students to attend St-Jean concert in Greater Sudbury
On Tuesday, June 3, at 10:30 a.m., nearly 4,500 grade 5 to 12 Francophone students from some 30 schools in Greater Sudbury, Sudbury East, Blind River, Chapleau, Dubreuilville, Elliot Lake, Espanola, Hornepayne, Sault Ste. Marie, Spanish and Wawa will gather at the Sudbury Community Arena for the St-Jean concert. The show, presented by Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon, Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord and the St-Jean committee in Sudbury, will feature Franco-Ontarian band LGS (Le Groupe Swing). The 90-minute concert will mark the beginning of the St-Jean festivities in Greater Sudbury, which will continue until June 26.
By offering this high-quality performance, Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon, Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord, and the St-Jean Sudbury committee aim to provide students from French-language Catholic and public schools with a cultural and identity-building Francophone experience, while also strengthening their connections with partners in the Francophone community.
Celebrating their 25th career anniversary in 2024, LGS remains one of the most popular and festive bands, reinventing themselves with each new album. Nominated at Gala de l’ADISQ and JUNO Awards, and recipients of 13 Gala Trille Or awards, members of LGS deliver their own brand of urban pop inspired by 90s American pop sounds and today’s EDM. Known for their ultra-festive and energizing concerts, LGS brings fun to the Francophone world with their contagious energy.
Mahkena Rankin Guérin, a Two-Spirit Anishinaabe and Franco-Ontarian hoop dancer, will open the show. As a member of the Abitibiwinni First Nation, Mahkena is committed to preserving and passing on her Indigenous culture to future generations.
