La Grande Finale: an evening of breathtaking performances!

The audience was radiating with energy, warmth and excitement as eight talented groups of musicians made their mark at the grand finale event of Radio-Chaud, held on Thursday, May 31st, at Collège Boréal.

Eight groups of Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord high-school students took part in this event which challenged them to create a song, including writing the lyrics, composing the music and producing a music video.

Members of the Franco-Ontarian electro-rock band Règlement 17 served as the jury for the evening and awarded Distinction Awards for the students’ live performances, while jury members Ryan Demers, Anique Larose-Hogan and Denys Tremblay evaluated the students in the Promotion category of the competition, which dealt with the posters and promotional videos produced to support each song.

The band Règlement 17 is committed to promoting the Franco-Ontarian community’s heritage and especially its contemporary vitality. Through thoughtful lyrics and energetic melodies, the band sheds light on the contrasts and challenges of their experience of today’s world.

Ryan Demers is a graduate of Laurentian University’s Theatre Arts program and a cultural facilitator for the Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord. He has been involved in many stage productions and short films. In 2018, he directed Mambo Italiano, the TNO’s 38th annual community theatre production.

Anique Larose-Hogan is a graduate of both the Théâtre program and the Sciences de l’éducation program at Laurentian University. She is a committed and creative educator and a former cultural facilitator for the Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord. She is also the founder of Radio-Chaud’s Promotion competition.

Denys Tremblay is an actor, videographer and visual artist who divides his time between theatre, film and schools. For over 12 years, he has been organizing activities for students and adults and sharing his experience, knowledge and passion for the arts.

Here are the prizes that were awarded to the bands that performed at La Grande Finale:

Distinction Awards for best live performance:

• The band Distorsion musicale from École secondaire Cap sur l’Avenir (Sudbury) was commended for its powerful message, emotional connection and musical hook.
• The band Sept’année from École secondaire Château-Jeunesse (Longlac) was commended for its stage presence, costumes and teamwork.
• The band Carte Blanche from École secondaire Cité-Supérieure (Marathon) was commended for the song with the best radio potential and the band’s dynamic rhythm and audience involvement.
• The band k.ontraste from École secondaire Hanmer was commended for its intense performance, musical hook and on-stage rapport.
• The band Métaphare from École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier (Sudbury) was commended for its exceptional vocals, musical arrangements and guitar solo.
• The band Sans voix from École secondaire l’Orée des bois (Dubreuilville) was commended for its guitar and piano solos, stage presence and musical arrangements.
• The band Flyé from École secondaire de la Rivière-des-Français (Noëlville) was commended for its musical hook, teamwork and energetic rhythm.
• The band Propagande from École secondaire Villa Française des Jeunes (Elliot Lake) was commended for most original performance, exceptional vocals and on-stage energy.

Distinction Awards for the Promotion category (poster and music video):

• The team promoting Distorsion musicale from École secondaire Cap sur l’Avenir (Sudbury) was commended for its original storyline, poster design and keyboard graphic, and its exploration of both visual components.
• The team promoting Sept’année from École secondaire Château-Jeunesse (Longlac) was commended for poster design, camera work and special effects.
• The team promoting Carte Blanche from École secondaire Cité-Supérieure (Marathon) was commended for outstanding cinematography and editing, bold and innovative poster and music video, editing and special effects.
• The team promoting k.ontraste from École secondaire Hanmer was commended for its originality, experimental special effects and experimental use of contrast for its poster.
• The team promoting Métaphare from École secondaire Macdonald-Cartier (Sudbury) was commended for its poster’s esthetics and originality, its experimental camera work, use of new technologies and powerful cinematography.
• The team promoting Sans voix from École secondaire l’Orée des bois (Dubreuilville) was commended for its artistic concept, film direction and visual continuity.
• The team promoting Flyé from École secondaire Rivière-des-Français (Noëlville) was commended for its energy, costumes, sets and accessories, and the effectiveness and creativity of its music video.
• The team promoting Propagande from École secondaire Villa Française des Jeunes (Elliot Lake) was commended for the production value and end result (poster and video), effective visual effects and creative concept.

The Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord congratulates all the students who took part in this project and thank all of the collaborators who worked directly and indirectly with the students to ensure the phenomenal success of Radio-Chaud16. The Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord also thanks the judges for their excellent work and Collège Boréal for its facilities.

Radio-Chaud has become a must-see event for the Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord. Now in its 16th year, Radio-Chaud never fails to excite its participants and audiences alike. More than a hundred songs have been produced, recorded on CD and played on local radio stations since the project’s inception.

Recognized for its keen sense of innovation and openness to the world, Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord offers a French-language public education of the highest quality in eleven elementary schools and eight secondary schools in the communities of Markstay, Noëlville, Greater Sudbury, Elliot Lake, Sault Ste. Marie, Wawa, Dubreuilville, Marathon, Manitouwadge and Longlac.
